Auroralia Award 2011: BLISS lead partner St. Helens wins third prize
For the third successive year, the Auroralia Award - organised jointly by LUCI and Schréder - rewards the best sustainable urban lighting initiatives. Following lively discussions, the panel of independent judges composed of representatives from specialised press chose to give an award to Arraiolos (Portugal), Nivelles (Belgium) and St. Helens (UK), as well as a special mention for Remchingen (Germany).
Vallodolid wins city.people.light award 2011
The city of Valladolid in Spain has been awarded the first prize in the 2011 city.people.light awards, the annual global competition organized by Philips and the Lighting Urban Community International (LUCI) to reward projects which demonstrate the contribution lighting can make to the well-being of those who live, work or visit a city or town.
The award was presented to Mr. Javier León de la Riva, Mayor of the city of Valladolid the city's ‘Rivers of Light' project at a ceremony during the Annual General Assembly of LUCI in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The ‘Rivers of Light' project connects different areas of the centre of Valladolid, creating a new night vision of the city, which has had a big impact on citizens. Valladolid's most important historic monuments and squares have been brought to life with light: some dressed in a new, more comfortable and elegant light, whilst others have suddenly emerged from the darkness.
Rotterdam in the Netherlands, received the second prize for Broken Light by Rudolf Teunissen. The Japanese city of Kanazawa had a different mission with its third prize-winning submission to the 2011 city.people.light awards - creating a lighting sequence that represented the history and culture of Kanazawa.

BLISS* conference on energy-saving public lighting
Even though light efficiency and energy saving are currently more vividly debated than ever, all speakers at the conference of June 23th at the Arenberg Scientific Park in Leuven agreed that there is more to light and - more specifically - street lighting than figures, charts and statistics alone.

PLUS: capitalizing on sustainable lighting
Led by the City of Eindhoven (Netherlands), the PLUS project was submitted to EU authorities in 2010. It proposes to bring together a dozen cities around a shared goal: to capitalize on local and regional lighting approaches in order to maximize the contribution of public lighting to sustainable development.
Auroralia Award 2011 open for entries
Every year, the Auroralia Award, created in 2009 on the initiative of LUCI and Schréder, rewards three cities that have implemented a system of exterior lighting that minimises the environmental footprint in the most noticeable, exemplary and original way. An independent jury of experts from the international press specialising in urban lighting, town planning and sustainable development will apply the minimisation of the environmental footprint and of the environmental impact of the lighting project as the main selection criterion.

On September 15 during the Annual General Meeting of LUCI (Lighting Urban Community International) the first international charter on sustainable urban lighting was signed.
Centennial bulb celebrates 110 anniversary on June 18
In the American city Livermore (California) the longest burning light bulb in history will celebrate its 110th birthday on June 18. The bulb was first installed in June 1901 in the fire department hose cart house on L Street.
Malaga, a lighting to discover…under the microscope!
Malaga (Spain) is always looking for a harmonious way to reconcile a lifestyle consisting of an active nightlife, with efficient lighting management. "Our goal is to improve the efficiency of existing lighting," explains Jaime Briales, Director of Lighting for the City of Malaga (population 600,000), who mentions the investment of four million euros in the installation of stabilizers and voltage dividers at almost all lighting control points.

The City of Ghent presented the second phase of its lighting master plan to a record City under Microscope audience of nearly 150 participants in February 2010.
LUCI Charter on Urban Lighting
After meetings in Leipzig and Ghent, LUCI cities held a third meeting in Frankfurt on April 15th to finalise the 'LUCI Charter on Urban Lighting'.This document marks the commitment of network members to sustainable development. It will be signed during the next Annual General Meeting (15-19 September 2010) in Chartres, France.

LED lighting to be installed on the Eindhoven Airport taxiway

City under Microscope in Tallinn
The City of Tallinn (Estonia), the 2011 European Capital of Culture, will host the LUCI City under Microscope from the 2nd to the 5th of February 2011. Within the two days of the City under Microscope, Tallinn proposes a conference including expert lectures and reports along with less formal tours of the city.

The 2010 Russian Lighting Design award winners were announced on 9th November during the Interlight Moscow exhibition. The Russian Lighting Design competition is organized annually by VNISI (Russian Lighting Research Institute), OST-West Partners and the Russian Designers Association.

On the square in front of the station in Eindhoven 75 light fittings have been suspended between two guy lines at a height of 8 metres and over a distance of approximately 78 metres. The light fittings contain both white and green LEDs.
